I believe “Honey Everything” is the best song on my recent debut EP "Urge Me", especially for its groove and laid-back vibe. This song went through countless revisions, twisted and turned inside my head for hours before reaching its final form.
The lyrics came from a friend, Chris Verhagen, who asked for feedback on different sets of lyrics. One line, “There must have been a fire 'cause all I got was smoke,” caught my attention, and I asked him to build a whole set of lyrics around it. Those became the lyrics for “Honey Everything.”
I originally envisioned it as a big Indian bhangra production, but I couldn’t make that happen despite multiple attempts. Eventually, I worked with Craig Newnes from Salmon Arm at Song Sparrow Hall Studio to complete the production. He helped me bring in organic drums reminiscent of bhangra, even if the song wasn’t fully Bollywood-style as I’d hoped.
The bridge was challenging because I was set on a Bollywood feel that ultimately didn’t fit. But a local musician, Tim Weicker, helped unlock the song’s bridge with an impromptu bass riff that sparked a cascade of ideas. Craig’s assistance helped me assemble the pieces, and after all the fine-tuning, I’m thrilled with the result. It always makes me smile and groove, and I believe it’ll eventually be everyone’s favourite on this EP.
