“Overcome” began as I sat watching my first daughter in her crib, feeling overwhelmed with gratitude. Initially, it was a joyful song, but when my wife experienced postpartum depression, the song took on a bittersweet tone. She wrote some lyrics that touched me deeply, and I wove them into the music, giving it a more somber vibe.
My wife, who co-produced the song, influenced its direction. She preferred a sad ending without a joyful bridge, but I fought for and won the right to keep a scream at the end. Singing “Overcome” is easy because I personally experienced the struggles it represents. It was a simple production, completed in a day or two, and I am noticing that its raw quality resonates with a lot of listeners.
